Welcome to the very first edition of Friends of Leo's Friends — a new little corner of Leo's Notes where I introduce you to the people I'd actually call if it were my own family needing help.
Here's the thing about running a senior concierge business: I can't do everything. I'm fantastic at companionship, light support, and being the person who shows up when someone needs a hand (or just a friendly face and good conversation). But every so often, a family needs something I don't offer — and that's exactly where I see my job continuing. I'm an advocate for the people I work with, which means part of my role is finding the right business for every scenario Leo's Friends can't cover myself — instead of leaving you to Google your way through it and hope for the best, I'd rather just hand you my own list.
So that's what this series is. One trusted business, one specific circumstance, every time I post one. No long lineup of options to wade through, no “here are five companies, good luck” — just the one person I'd genuinely recommend, because I trust them and because they run their business the way I try to run mine. Over time, you'll see this grow to include things like a nutritionist, a housekeeping company, a mobility equipment store, and whatever else I come across that I think genuinely deserves a spot on this list.
First up: downsizing and senior relocation. And there is genuinely only one person on Central Vancouver Island I'd send you to for that — Rae-Lynn, of Refine Home Inc.
Rae-Lynn is the founder of Refine Home Inc., and her team specializes in downsizing, senior relocation, and professional organizing — basically, all the “where do I even start” moments that come with helping someone shrink a lifetime of belongings into a smaller space. I chatted with her recently about her work, and asked her some of the exact same questions I get asked all the time about mine.
Here's what she had to say.
What services do you provide?
“We specialize in downsizing, senior relocation, and professional organizing. We support clients with rightsizing, home organizing, move management, preparing a home for sale, and responsible removal and recycling coordination. Every item has a story and every client has unique needs, so we tailor our services to fit each home and family.”
Why did you start Refine Home Inc.?
“Before launching Refine Home Inc., I spent more than 30 years as a preschool teacher. During that time, I developed a deep appreciation for how thoughtfully designed environments can shape the way people feel, function, and thrive. After returning to Vancouver Island in 2021, I recognized a growing need for hands-on support with downsizing, move management, packing and unpacking, donation coordination, and all the details involved in preparing a home for transition. That's what led to Refine Home Inc.”
Why she loves what she does
You can feel it on her site before you even talk to her — Rae-Lynn talks about being driven by the transformation that happens when clutter is reduced and thoughtful systems are put in place. After 30+ years working with people as a preschool teacher, she clearly still gets a charge out of helping someone go from overwhelmed to settled. It's not hard to imagine why: helping someone move through one of life's hardest transitions, and come out the other side feeling lighter, has got to be pretty meaningful work.
Who hires her most
Based on her site, Refine Home Inc. supports both seniors themselves and the families helping them through a transition — whether that's downsizing, preparing a home for sale, or relocating to a smaller space. In my own experience doing this kind of work, it's often a real mix: sometimes it's the person making the move themselves, and just as often it's an adult child trying to support a parent while juggling their own life too.
What are the benefits of bringing someone in to help with this kind of project?
“Downsizing and moving touch every part of a person's life. Our team brings patience, professionalism, and a non-judgmental approach to every project. We understand that every item has a story, and our goal is always to save our clients stress, time, and energy — while creating peaceful, functional living spaces.”
How long does it normally take?
“Honestly, it really varies depending on the job and the scope of the project — every home and every family is different. That's exactly why we always start with a consultation. It's the best way for us to get a real sense of what's involved and give you an accurate idea of the timeline, rather than guessing.”
Rae-Lynn's site lays out exactly how that process works: it starts with a one-on-one consultation (usually available within a week of reaching out), where she gets to know you and your goals and gives you a clear estimate of timing and resources. From there, she helps you plan your timeline and budget — for moving, relocation, downsizing, and organizing projects, she recommends booking at least 4–6 weeks in advance to secure your preferred dates. Then she gets you scheduled, creates a customized plan, and handles all of the coordination from start to finish.
Do you have any reviews you'd like to share?
Rae-Lynn has a lovely “What Our Clients Say” section on her site — I'd encourage you to head over to refinehomeinc.com/contact and read through those directly, since I want to make sure her clients' words are represented exactly as they shared them.
A note from me
I'll be honest — I didn't pick Rae-Lynn because she was the first downsizing company that came up in a search. I picked her because the way she talks about her work sounds exactly like the way I talk about mine: patient, practical, and genuinely caring about the person in front of her, not just the job in front of her. That matters to me. If I'm putting my name next to someone's business, I need to actually believe in how they treat people.
And I've seen it for myself. I've watched Rae-Lynn at work, and I have never met anyone who operates so efficiently, full stop — but what really gets me is the contrast. She's soft-spoken and genuinely kind, and yet somehow still every bit the boss lady running a tight, excellent business. That combination is rarer than people think. Her calm, gentle way of speaking to people isn't just a nice personality trait — it's exactly what makes her so good at this work, because she's usually walking into someone's home during one of the hardest, most emotional transitions of their life. Care and efficiency don't always come in the same package. With Rae-Lynn, they do.
And honestly, our two businesses just make sense together. I'm the day-to-day — the companionship, the little bit of extra help that lets someone keep living independently and well. Rae-Lynn is the big stuff — the move, the downsize, the “how do I possibly sort through 50 years of memories” moment. Different jobs, same goal: making sure the people we work with feel supported, not steamrolled.
So if you're a family on Central Vancouver Island staring down a move or a downsizing project, do yourself a favour and call Rae-Lynn before you call anyone else. And if you're already one of my clients and this kind of project pops up for your family, just ask me — I'll happily make the introduction myself.
You can find Rae-Lynn and her team at refinehomeinc.com.
Stay tuned for the next Friends of Leo's Friends feature — I've got a few more people up my sleeve I can't wait to introduce you to.
That's all for now. Keep an eye out for more of Leo's Notes and get ready to meet more of our Friends!!
