Meet Grada Lynne: She Speaks Fluent Finance

Updated: 7 days ago

And actually explains it, in plain English

Welcome back to another edition of Friends of Leo's Friends — where I introduce you to the people I'd genuinely call if it were my own family that needed help.

This month's feature is a little different, because we're not talking about the home, or the fridge, or the yard. We're talking about the question that quietly sits underneath almost everything else for seniors and their families: do I have enough?

That's the exact question my next friend hears more than any other. Meet Grada Lynne Johnson, Investment Advisor with RBC Wealth Management, based in Ladysmith and working with clients across the Island.

Here's what Grada Lynne had to say.

About Grada Lynne & Her Business

Tell us a little about yourself and your business. What do you do, and who do you do it for?

I grew up on the island in an era where everyone left after graduation to get a job or start their careers. After 15 years in Vancouver and Victoria I've come home to work with business owners and retirees that create opportunities for families to stay. Supporting local businesses creates more work opportunities for today's graduating generation, and managing family wealth transition from one generation to the next keeps funds with families and off tax bills.

How long have you been doing this work?

I started in finance in 2001, my first job in university to help cover my student loans. I have been spoiled with mentors and opportunities the past 20 years of experience which all add value to the support I give my clients today.

What made you want to start this business? Was there a specific moment or experience that led you here?

I am from a family of teachers, and when I started working at the bank at 19 years old it was like learning a new language. I didn't get any exposure to financial education in high school so I play my teaching card in helping my community learn how to manage their money to make the most of it.

Where are you located, and what areas do you serve?

I live in Ladysmith, but our office is located in Nanaimo, which is Central Vancouver Island. Though you do not need to live in town for my help with your future investing.

Her Work with Seniors & Families

How much of your work involves seniors specifically, and what does that typically look like?

Retirement is a key life event where most Canadians seek expert advice, so while I meet many clients preparing for retirement I also meet their kids to help prepare legacies to support future generations of their families.

Can you share a situation where you realized seniors need more support in this area than most people think?

As seniors in Canada approach retirement, many move from a single regular pay cheque to multiple income options — and unless you spent your career in finance, seniors aren't always prepared to navigate these choices. Income planning will have a big impact on how your net worth changes through retirement and ultimately passes on to your beneficiaries.

What do families often get wrong or underestimate when they're trying to help a senior parent or loved one with this?

The biggest regret I hear is that they hadn't talked about it — sometimes sooner, sometimes at all. Previous generations didn't have a lot of financial conversations as it was considered rude or “taboo.” Almost every one of the decision makers I work with wishes that they had a clearer picture of what aging parents would have wanted. Try and ask hard questions on easy days to help get everyone on the same page.

What's the most common question seniors ask you? And what's your answer?

The number one question has always been “do I have enough?” Working with a professional advisor should paint a clear picture of your current financial situation and how it will change over time, so you can make the best decisions for your future.

When is the right time to reach out to someone like you? What are the signs a family should be looking for?

It's never too early or too late to start financial planning — common triggers are events like death, divorce, and retirement.

What Makes Her Different

What makes your approach different from others in your field?

I work with clients to not only manage an investment portfolio, but also build a relationship that often passes on to the next generation. While tailored investment strategies and estate planning services can add so much value, I also have the benefit of knowing I have a 20+ year future timeline ahead to support my clients.

What does a typical first step or consultation look like for someone reaching out to you for the first time?

Our first step is always a discovery meeting. This is a conversation where we try to learn as much as we can about your situation to explore how and where we can add value by working together.

How long do your projects or engagements usually take? What affects the timeline?

The full on-boarding process can take 3-6 months, and sometimes up to 2 years of planning based on client complexities. Most meetings last about an hour and happen 2-3 times a year.

Do you have a client story you'd be comfortable sharing?

I'm currently working with clients who have assets all over the world but beneficiaries all within Canada. Bringing in global currencies can take a lot longer depending on international tax treaties, but consolidating now not only simplifies their current financial situation — it also makes the estate process for their family much easier.

The Fun Stuff

Why do you love what you do? What keeps you going on the hard days?

I love getting to know new people, empowering financial decisions through education, and most of all helping families have conversations that will protect positive dynamics for the next generation.

What's one thing you wish more people knew about your area of service — something that might surprise them?

I would say two things — one, that we are always happy to help, so meetings aren't hard to come by — and second, that we are often not as organized personally as you would think! It's a safe space, for creating client understanding, not judgement.

Is there anything else you'd like seniors and their families on Central Vancouver Island to know about you or your business?

Between our wealth management teams and branch partners, we really do have something for everyone — make a friend in finance and make sure you aren't missing out (you don't know what you don't know!)

A note from me

What I love about Grada Lynne is that she's not selling complexity — she's translating it. So many of the families I work with are navigating a parent's finances for the first time, usually under stress, usually with more questions than answers. Having someone patient, local, and genuinely interested in the whole family — not just the account — makes an enormous difference.

If you've been putting off that conversation because it feels too big, too awkward, or too late to start: it isn't. Reach out to Grada Lynne, and make a friend in finance before you need one.
